How to measure a house for siding
- Perimeter: measure around the outside walls. A 60 by 32 foot ranch is 184 feet.
- Wall height: measure from the bottom of the siding to the soffit. Most single-story homes here are 9 to 10 feet.
- Gables: the triangles at the ends of the roof. The calculator works them out from the width, assuming a 6/12 roof pitch.
- Openings: count windows and doors. The calculator takes off about 18 square feet for each one, a normal window size.
Siding is sold by the square, just like roofing. One square covers 100 square feet of wall. The calculator adds 10 percent for cuts around windows, corners and gables.
